‘The Game’ (Ohio State vs. Michigan) Prediction

‘In the 1968 Ohio State versus Michigan game, already up 42-14, Ohio State scored another touchdown. Woody Hayes then called for a two point conversion, which they converted. When asked why he did it, Woody said; “Because the rules won’t let you go for three.”‘

That quote sums up the genuine dislike between these two teams. I grew up in Tallahassee and the FSU/Florida rivalry doesn’t come close. In Columbus, this game makes or breaks the season. This year, the focus is slightly diminished because Ohio State has already punched their ticket to the Big 10 Championship game next weekend. However, make no mistake, this game is still huge. Ohio State comes in undefeated with an outside chance of a National Championship berth. Michigan, on the other hand, has a chance to redeem what’s been a disappointing season and ruin the championship run of their rival (see 1969 or the entire John Cooper era).

Here are my quick thoughts. Urban Meyer is 21-3 in rivalry games from his time at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida. Advantage – Ohio State

Ohio State has a ton more talent and is better coached – Advantage – Ohio State

There are numerous articles that Michigan fans are selling their tickets in droves (some tickets are rumored to be as low as $60). This means lots of OSU fans at the game…. Advantage – Ohio State

Game day weather – Cold with a moderate wind – This helps Ohio State because they’ll be able to execute their game plan without having to worry about footing/rain/snow – Advantage – Ohio State

Winning streak – Ohio State has won a school record 23 games in a row! – Advantage – Ohio State

Horrible Uniforms – Advantage Michigan

Given the way the teams have played this year, I really think Ohio State should win easily. The question will be if they can play within their emotions and avoid making costly plays (fumbles, interceptions, etc.). My prediction is that Braxton Miller and Carlos Hyde run wild over the wolverines. The Ohio State defense is just bad enough to give Michigan some hope, but in the end, Ohio State wins 31-17.

As an added bonus, here’s a picture from the game last year with Ohio State capping off an undefeated season and the kids storming the field in celebration.

OSU vs. Illinois Prediction

In my ongoing quest to show how I suck at gambling, I’m keeping it going this week with my Illinois prediction. Ohio State comes in favored by 32 points and the over/under is set at 67. There’s no doubt that Ohio State will roll in this game as they have a lot to prove to the people who make up the polls. I think Ohio State wins big. The issue I have is I don’t think Illinois is going to score much so I have trouble with the over/under. The way Ohio State has been playing, I think Ohio State wins by a score of 56-7. Unfortunately this is exactly at the over/under that Vegas has set. I guess those fancy casinos aren’t built by people winning. Anyway, my official picks are OSU to cover and the under (see below).

As an added bonus, here’s me in 2009 with some Illinois fans at the Varsity Club in Columbus, Ohio.

Last week – 0-2 (Penn State really sucks)

Ohio State vs. Penn State Prediction

Let me start this week by saying I don’t like Penn State. They’re probably my least favorite team in the Big 10 and they have a deserved reputation as having the worst fans in the league. For an example, check out this video from 2007….

Personally, I hope Ohio State wins by 50 but that probably won’t happen. Penn State is coming off a huge win two weeks ago versus Michigan and had a bye last week to rest up and prepare. Ohio State on the other hand looked about as good on offense as they have all season versus Iowa. Unfortunately, the defense continued to be exposed against the pass. I’ve said all year that I don’t understand why the cornerbacks and safeties give a 10+ yard cushion to the opposing wide receivers on every play. It’s maddening to watch.

With that said, I really think Penn State is going to come out throwing the ball and it’s going to be up to Ohio State to stop it. I’m not sure Ohio State is up to the challenge. On the other side, I don’t think PSU’s defense can match up with Ohio State and Braxton Miller. For this, I think Ohio State wins, but not by more than 14. I think both teams will be able to move the ball down the field, but no way Penn State beats OSU on the road at night. I’ll be in attendance to hopefully witness the Buckeye victory!

Ohio State vs. Iowa Prediction

Well…. we’re six weeks in on my experiment on how I would do if I gambled on Ohio State for every game all season long. So far it continues to be a cautionary tale on the evils of sports betting. At the halfway mark, I’m a pathetic 4-5-1. Based on my understanding of vigs and whatnot, by the end of the season, I would need to have a winning percentage of around 56% to break even and 60% or above to make any money.

Before I make my OSU pick, I want to throw out there that I’m really excited about the Playoff Selection Committee and I think they scored a home-run by getting Condoleezza Rice on the committee.  I’m not sure the rationale of some people bashing having a woman participate. It’s 2013. I think we should have the smartest people who have a diverse background and know how to get things done. Judging on the interview by Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel, she seems more qualified than most. She’s exactly the type of person that I want on a committee.

So this week Ohio State hosts the University of Iowa in Columbus. The line is that Ohio State will win by 17 points and the over/under is 55.5 total points. Both teams are coming off of a bye week so they should be well rested. The talk around Columbus is how great the Iowa defense is and how sloppy Ohio State played versus Northwestern. I think this game is going to be a low scoring game and Ohio State pulls out a comfortable victory, but I don’t think they win by 17 points.

So this happened in 2008. I don’t look prepared to
have my picture taken. Bad times.

Over/Under – 55.5

This week – Iowa covers and the Under

Last week – 0-2 (thanks to the last second touchdown by OSU)

Season – 4-5-1

OSU vs. Cal Predictions

In my ongoing series on Ohio State predictions… I went 1-1 for the second week in a row. I was correct in Ohio State covering the spread, but missed on the over/under (the exact opposite of the previous week). For the year, I’m 2-2 so if bet a mythical $100 on each bet, I’d still be even (minus the vig).

This week, Ohio State travels to the east coast to play the University of California…. this game nervouses me for a ton of reasons. I still don’t have faith in the defense…. and I’m concerned that Braxton Miller won’t play or will play hurt.

Line – OSU by 15
Over/Under – 65.5

My official picks are…. OSU does not cover and the Over….

On the season… 2 wins – 2 loses
