2014 Dog Jog and Why It Matters to Me

My first Citizens for Humane Action Dog Jog was in August 2008. It’s something I’ll never forget. The day before the race, my divorce became final, then, in a horrible twist of fate…. my grandfather passed away a few hours later. It was, without question, one of the worst days of my life.

I had signed up for the Dog Jog a few weeks prior because I wanted something to look forward to and thought this would be a good distraction.

When I arrived at the race, I found my good friend, Billy. It was great to have some support at the race. You can see from the picture how young and thin I was.

Tobey was so happy that day. And I felt great helping homeless animals. It was exactly what I needed. We ran 5k in 23 minutes and 34 seconds (7:30 average).

I’ve kept the Dog Jog on my  Calendar ever since. I even showed up with a severely sprained ankle one year. I didn’t run, but I was there. I’ve raised more than $3,400 since my first race.

I started bringing my Lillian and the woman who would become my wife. The event morphed into something I looked forward to every year. Something I could do to give back to the animals that can’t help themselves and something I could do with my best friend Tobey.

This year, Tobey is turning 9. It’s something that I’m having a hard time with. He’s started to slow down physically, which breaks my heart. It takes him longer to recover from runs, and he can’t go as fast as he could before. That’s why this year’s Dog Jog is so important to me.

There is a real chance this could be the last formal run we do together. We likely won’t beat our personal record (22:35 in 2009), but we will remain committed to the cause.

We’re going to show up and we’re going to have an amazing time helping other dogs. In the end, that’s what the CHA Dog Jog is all about.

I personally can’t wait.

Lili Turns 5!

Today is Lilian’s 5th birthday. For those who don’t know, Lili is my blue weimaraner and is quite possibly the sweetest dog ever. Unlike my gray weimaraner Tobey, Lil never got the memo on how weims are supposed to be hyper and high strung. I thought I would mark the occasion by posting some of my favorite pictures of Lili to share.

2013 Year in Review – Picture Edition

As we approach Christmas, I’ve been watching a lot of Christmas movies and have come to the conclusion that they’re all horrible. We started by watching ‘Christmas Vacation’, which has become outrageously outdated. Next up was ‘The Santa Clause’ which looks likes it was filmed by a middle school A/V department. I’m convinced that ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ and ‘The Elf’ are the only decent Christmas movies out there. Between the movies and the loathing the song ‘Do they know it’s Christmas’, I’m feeling like a huge grinch. As such, I thought I would write a quick post on some of my favorite pictures of 2013.

The first couple of pictures come from my  engagement photo session in April. We wanted to incorporate the pups since I met my wife at the dog park. The puppies did not want to cooperate and our wonderful photographer (Britt Lakin) managed to snap the two photos below of the chaos…. They instantly became my favorite pictures.

The second set of pictures comes from our wedding in June. I apologize if I’ve already posted these. Six months into the marriage, I’m happier than I’ve ever been. For Christmas, we bought each an XBox One. Since she doesn’t read this blog, for her birthday, I’m thinking of buying her a Wii U because she’s a huge Zelda fan.

One of my favorite moments was the 2013 CHA Dog Jog. Tobey and I had a great time. We didn’t do fund raising this year, but we still had a great time. Tobey finished 3rd and won a gift basket.

The fall was consumed with OSU Football. Even though they lost the Big Ten Championship, I learned not to gamble on football and finished with a 9-12-1 record. If I bet $50 on each bet, I’d be down a few hundred dollars. Not good. As bad as the gambling would have been, the games were amazing. Below are some of my favorite pictures of the year.

Other events I didn’t include…. Weird Al concert, Honeymoon in the US Virgin Islands, Misc. Dog photos, etc. For as great as 2013 was, I can’t wait for 2014.

Random Weim Pictures (Thanksgiving Edition)

I haven’t done this for a while so I want to post some random pictures of my Weimaraners, Tobey (gray) and Lillian (blue).

The first picture is for Nosember. This totally caused me to be late for work. Tobey laid on my leg and Lili came to join him.

The second picture is of Tobey. He turned 8 last Saturday and to celebrate, my wife baked some homemade treats. I gave both weims one as they came in from outside. Lili came inside first and could have devoured hers with a straw. Once Tobey came in, I gave him his treat but he didn’t eat it. He kept it in his mouth for about 10 minutes. I think he was treating it like a treasure. I managed to snap the picture below of him with the treat still in his mouth. Eventually, I made him drop the treat and he finally ate it. It was one of the funniest things I’ve seen.

The last picture was taken tonight (Thanksgiving). Tobey is sleeping on the couch and Lillian is snuggled in a blanket laying on her big brother and best friend. Both pups are incredibly happy.

Weimaraners…. Super Sweet Puppies or Cold-Blooded Killing Machines?

I was going through my blog dashboard tonight and stumbled across this article that I wrote a few months ago but never published. It’s a little rough, but enjoy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have the greatest two dogs known to man. Without Tobey, my life wouldn’t be as rich. I wouldn’t have a dedicated running companion and friend, and more importantly, I wouldn’t have met my wife. For those that don’t know the story, we met at the Alum Creek Dog Park during Pupapolooza because she had a weimaraner puppy named Lillian and I had Tobey. We started talking and the next thing we knew, we had a play-date set up and the rest is history.
The problem with the dogs is that they put on a magnificent facade by acting incredibly sweet and innocent while secretly being cold-blooded killers (especially the Blue (Lillian)). Take a look at the pictures below and try to say they aren’t some of the sweetest dogs you’ve ever seen….
As sweet as they are, the pups are still incredibly protective and territorial. So far this year, Lillian has a squirrel and multiple birds under her belt. In his lifetime, Tobey has tree’d multiple cats, chased many many deer, and also has a few birds and field mice on his resume. Their crowning achievement was a groundhog that they combined to kill two days before our wedding. I can say without question, this was the worst wedding present we received.
20130627_150320As I mentioned…. worst wedding present ever
As much as I love the dogs, my only wish is that they could dispose of their prey far far away from the house.
